Apple has followed a consistent trend of acquiring patents with a focus on waterproof and water resistant features for devices like the iPhone, the iPad, and even MacBooks, though the latter of which may never see any practical applications.
It has been now a year since the iPad Pro’s debut into the market, and word of an iPad Pro 2 has been consistent, mostly in regard to an updated A9X processor, increased memory, larger storage, and a 10.5 inch variant targeting business customers.
According to reliable sources that include KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to focus on the iPad lineup a lot more than it has done in the past, with quite a few possible changes ahead, including a rumored discontinuation of the iPad Air lineup.
With that said, the next iPad Pro, or iPad Pro 2, is expected to integrate water-repellent technologies, as seen on some of the most recent patents, describing a method of using vibrations to repel liquids from common points of entry like the speakers, and data connectors.
This also means a stronger chance that the iPad Pro 2 will not feature a 3.5mm audio jack, but rather provide a Lightning-to-headphone-jack adapter for those who wish to use analog earbuds.
As always, the iPad Pro 2 is expected to be thinner and lighter, as well as being capable of record and playback 4K video.
Sources also suggest that an all-new processor could be in the works, designed specifically to handle the intense workload of the iPad Pro, with more advanced power management features necessary to keep the iPad Pro running for as long, or longer than the current 12.5 inch model.
It’s unclear whether the features will also appear in other sizes of the tablet, such as the 9.7 inch version, and the yet to be confirmed 10.5 inch iPad Pro expected to be released in 2017.
