2017 devices expected to fuel even more “Mac vs. PC” than ever, and it’s a good thing.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

Even if only a fraction of what we hear is true, in regard to all the cool devices that are expected to launch between this Fall and 2017, there is a lot to be excited about.

Since 2015, if you have been in the market for a super-thin and sleek Apple MacBook, or a stylish and powerful iMac Retina, Apple has churned out quite a few updates to its product lines, with features like 4K and 5K retina displays, and the first ever USB Type-C enabled MacBook, with Force Touch trackpad, and a brand new mechanism for its keyboard, known as the Butterfly mechanism, set to replace the age-old scissor-switch.

On the Windows 10 front, Microsoft has built a fair bit atop its Surface line of hybrid tablets, and even built a slick new Surface Book laptop, featuring some cool tech, such as a detachable screen that becomes an autonomous tablet, powered by its own integrated GPU and battery, and when attached to the base, a discrete NVIDIA GPU takes over the heavy lifting, including a number of high-end game titles (with adjusted settings).

2017 promises some significant changes in how we shop for laptops and tablets. Intel’s 7th generation processor integrates native handling of 4K video, USB Type-C support, Thunderbolt 3, and DisplayPort, which means that future laptops will be able to connect to multiple 4K displays, handle video processing, and 3D rendering in real time, unlike any previous CPU, with less reliance on other hardware.

Microsoft has been rumored to be working on two brand new devices for next year. The first one will be the second generation Surface Book, which will likely lose the dynamic hinge gap, for a more flexible and seamless design. Sources at Windows Central, claim that the next Surface Book will be able to close all the way, without gaps due to the dynamic hinge’s current design.

The second device we’ll probably see is a brand new Surface Desktop product line, which is rumored to offer three PC alternatives to the Apple iMac Retina.

The new Windows 10 powered desktop all-in-ones will come in three sizes, a 21 and 24 inch size in regular HD, and a 27 inch model which will support 4K.

The three new all-in-ones are said to be targeted to consumers looking to make their Windows PC a living room fixture, although it is unclear on whether there will be any kind of remote control feature.

Also, there is word of these all-in-ones to break from the typical mold of non-upgradeable consumer devices, with features that would make these desktop AIOs “modular”, to allow for hardware upgrades, at least according to a recent patent filed by Microsoft, which describes a similar device in details.

The Surface Pro 5 is also a possibility, although little word of a possible refresh of the Surface Pro 4 is circulating.
