Let’s not get our hopes up, but the rumor-mill has been churning out news of the laptop-class Y-Series Intel Core Kaby Lake chips, already in the hands of manufacturers, including Apple.
This could spell big news for fans of the MacBook Pro, as the next model to be announced, could pack a 7th generation Intel CPU, and all the bells and whistles that come with it, including 4K video support, stronger hardware-based security and encryption, and USB Type-C native support, as well as 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 native support.
As a term of comparison, the current Skylake-powered laptops can only handle one external 4K display at 60Hz, and still require a separate processing controller to handle additional 4K video processing. A Kaby Lake-powered laptop would be able to handle two 4K displays at 60Hz, without additional hardware required, which translates in better power management and optimization.
The full line-up of the 7th generation CPU includes 5 classes: two classes dedicated to ultraportables like the 12 inch MacBook Retina, one class for high-end laptops like the Macbook Pro, one class for high-power workstations, and one class for servers.
If the rumors are true, this could mean a better chance for Apple to release a more powerful, more advanced Apple MacBook Pro, at the same time, or within a reasonable timeframe as Microsoft’s own updates of the Surface product line, as well as other manufacturers eager to showcase their own Kaby Lake-powered devices.
