12 inch Apple MacBook owners with faulty USB-C cables can get theirs replaced for free
According to a support document published on Friday, February 12, Apple has initiated a replacement program for what seems to be a small number of USB Type-C charging cables shipped with the 2015, 12-inch MacBook Retina, which may malfunction due to a design issue. The support document doesn’t say anything about potential charging hazards, as it points out that the problem observed with these cables is either the inability, or partial ability to charge the MacBook. No other adverse effects have been found.
To get the free cable replacement, eligible owners of 12 inch MacBook Retina laptops must register their devices with a valid email address, as soon as possible, as the program ends at the end of this month. Alternatively, eligible MacBook cable serial numbers can be found on the cable itself. Once retrieved, the serial number is all that’s needed by an Apple authorized dealer, to go ahead with the replacement program.
For those who have not heard of this program yet, and have purchased a replacement cable, can also contact Apple directly, for information on how to get a refund on the new cable.
Since its unveiling, The 12 inch MacBook Retina has been the focus of attention, due to Apple’s decision to integrate a single USB-C port, capable of charging the device, as well as connecting to other devices, directly, or through multiple adapters, offering the ability to plug in regular USB 2.0 and 3.0 devices, as well as devices using a Lightning port, such as external displays.
The device’s 12 inch form factor provides an additional option for MacBook users looking for something a little smaller than a 13 inch MacBook Air, but just as portable and powerful. The 12 inch MacBook was also introduced along with a range of new technologies that would later extend to other MacBooks, such as the improved keyboard with butterfly mechanism and Force Touch trackpad, now standard on all new MacBooks.
