The debate over consumers rights to unlock their phones has finally been put to rest with President Obama’s signing of the Unlocking Consum​er Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which enables consumers to legally unlock their devices, either by requesting the service from their own carrier, or through an independent party. How does this change things for most consumers? It doesn’t.

Not every request has been successful, as the ruling must abide to guidelines that prevent unlawful or malicious use of the law, such as take-down requests as an accessory of business malpractice. The take-down council’s latest numbers show 32% of requests denied, 15% needing further information, and 53% processed.

The message caused some confusion, especially to tabloid news outlets, blogs and virtually news source looking for an outrageous scoop, as rumors of a barrage of 911 calls from concerned citizens in the LA area demanding police to do something about restoring the service, spread like wildfire.
